Spatial Analysis Unit

The analysis unit (or unit of analysis) is the spatial unit of observation that is processed by a spatially oriented software analysis system or tool. By unit of observation, we mean that raw data needed to support the analysis have been attributed to the landscape unit or geoprocessed (e.g., with ArcGIS Spatial Analyst) and summarized (count, mean, min, max, etc.) to the analysis unit. Analysis units may be either features or raster cells.

Analysis units can be natural (e.g. watershed), or geopolitical or administrative (e.g. state).
