Some software systems and tools use patches as their unit of observation. The notion of patch as a particular unit of analysis is simply that of an area with relatively small spatial extent such as a forest stand or agricultural field. However, as with the concepts of region and subregion, the concept of patch is not closely tied to scale or spatial extent.
