Region

Some software systems and tools use regions as their unit of observation. The definition of a region is most often based on geography or political boundaries (e.g., the Northwest US), but definitions based on socioeconomic criteria are not uncommon (e.g., rust belt or Bible belt). The concept of region is highly relative and therefore not closely tied to scale or spatial extent (e.g., the northwestern region of the US version that of Belgium).
