Geodesign problems represent explicitly location and spatial arrangements. The main characteristics of geodesign problems include:
- multiple design alternatives ranging from a few to many,
- the outcomes or consequences of the design alternatives are spatially variable, each alternative is evaluated on the basis of multiple criteria,
- some of the criteria may be qualitative while others may be quantitative,
- there are typically more then one decision maker (or interest group) involved in the design decision-making process,
- the decision makers have different preferences with respect to the relative importance of evaluation criteria and design decision consequences,
- the design decisions are often surrounded by uncertainty.
