Most decision processes can be described in terms of three fundamental objectives: minimize negative consequences, maximize benefits, or some balancing of benefits and consequences. The first two types are a form of optimization without constraints, whereas the third represents the more typical problem of optimizing under some set of constraints. Other more exotic types of objectives can be enumerated, for example minimax and maximin, but it is not clear at the present time whether these need to be accounted for in this ontology.
