Process models attempt to explain the evolution of the state of a system (usually over time) in terms of the interdependencies among processes and states of the constituent components of the system. Models of net primary productivity (NPP) in vegetation are a classic example of this type of model. Because almost all process models have a temporal dimension, they are usually implemented as simulation models.
