Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security was established in 2002 to secure the United States from terrorist attacks or any large-scale natural or man-made hazard or threat. This is accomplished through a strategy of awareness (identify and understand threats and assess vulnerabilities); prevention (detect, deter, and mitigate threats); protection (safeguard people and infrastructure); response (lead, manage, and coordinate actions to deter and minimize terrorism or natural disasters); recovery (assist local efforts to restore services and rebuild communities after emergencies); and, service (facilitate lawful trade, travel, and immigration).
