Spatial processes exhibit patterns that invalidate some of the basic assumptions of traditional (aspatial) statistics. The major assumption behind conventional statistics is that the data are not autocorrelated. This assumption contradicts the first law of geography (Tobles 1979) which says everything is related to everything else but that values at close by locations are more correlated than values at distant locations. Consequently geostatistics assumes that adjoining locations (areas) are related to each other spatially.
