Multivariate analysis is the umbrella term for two main types of multivariate procedures; classification and prediction (Johnson 1978). Cluster, discriminant, principal component and factor analyses are categorized as classification procedures, while multiple regression and trend surface analyses are prediction techniques (similar to descriptive statistics). EDA, exploratory data analysis, (Tukey 1977; Cox and Jones 1981; Openshaw 1994) is an important component.
