In a broad sense, simulation is a methodology for performing experiments using a model of the real-world system (Rubenstein 1981; Mather 1991; Englund 1993). The primary difference between optimization and simulation is their starting point, since optimization begins by defining objectives and simulation begins with actions and studies their effects.
