Sometimes a planning process sets up a performance target that the design/plan needs to reach. For example, in an urban planning project, one may have a performance target for the number of housing units to be developed, or the number of acres of open space to be created. Performance checking is done after a design alternative is created to check how well the design alternative is meeting the set performance target. It can also be done during a design is being created to give the designer “instant” feedback on the effect of their design.
